EXCERPT FROM NATHAN MCLEOD’S BIO ON MYSPACE “About Nathan McLeod”

Nathan McCleod plays jazz saxophone
Nathan McCleod plays jazz saxophone
Nathan McLeod first got into jazz saxophone after hearing Charlie Parker’s album “Now’s the Time” while a senior in high school. Soon after that he attended the Jamey Aebersold summer jazz workshop to learn the odds and ends of jazz improvisation. He returned to the workshop for two years after that. In 2003 Nathan graduated with a BM in music composition from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. While getting his undergraduate degree, Nathan began playing professionally for the first time around his native town of Fayetteville Arkansas. In an effort to advance his musical pursuits, Nathan moved to Kansas City to study with the illustrious Bobby Watson, former alto saxophonist and musical director for Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. As the final degree requirement for his MA in jazz and studio music, Nathan recorded his first full-length album of predominantly original compositions. Relocating back to his hometown since finishing school in 2006, Nathan continues to play frequently, write music and put various groups together for shows, as well as teach privately.

Introducing: a new band from Fayetteville called “3 Penny Acre”.

The new rootsy string band from fayetteville called 3 Penny Acre is coming to play live on the radio tonite for yall.
The new rootsy string band from fayetteville called 3 Penny Acre is coming to play live on the radio tonite for yall.
Members of Three Penny Acre will perform a live acoustic set on-the-air tonight from the studios of KXUA 88.3 FM Fayetteville. If the recording comes out nicely we’ll produce a podcast mp3 episode of 3 Penny Acre!

The band features newgrass and folk instrumentation, singer-songwriters, two women in the band, and a barn-full of voices singing songs and pickin’ tunes for y’all. Members of 3Penny are well known players from the Northwest Arkansas acoustic and roots music community. 3 Penny Acre band members are Shannon Wurst-Guitar and Vocals, Cody Russell-Dobro and Banjo, Bayard Blain-Mandolin, and Guitar, Bernice Hembree-Up-right Bass and Vocals, Bryan Hembree- Guitar, Mandolin and Vocals.

They have played several shows in the region and around Dickson Street, as 3 Penny Acre. All of the band members are regulars of the stage for the past quite a few years, with outfits like the alt-country powerhouse Charliehorse, the bluegrass of Wildwood, the duo of Bryan and Bernice, and Shannon Wurst’s solo work, full band CD, and collaborations with Sisters In The Round (other female singer-songwriter musicians from the Fayetteville area).

On the radio history…. Cody Russell has performed on Honest Tunes episodes in the past with his band Charliehorse, with Shannon Wurst, and with Sarah Hughes. Shannon Wurst has appeared solo and as part of Sisters In the Round on Honest Tunes before. I’m happy to welcome them back on the radio show again and thrilled to present this new Fayetteville string-music combo.

This is my first time to visit with 3 Penny Acre as a new band. I’ll ask them some interview questions, warm up the bio and instrumentation, find out about the 3 Penny Acre website Myspace address, and then invite the band to perform some live acoustic songs on the air for you.
