The band My-Tea Kind hails from Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Three sisters and one guy create a truly original mix of music: singer/songwriter troupe with new gypsy, funky folk, art rock, and international flair. Bonnie Paine leads with silky singing and nimble-fingered washboard beats. Sarah Garde accompanies on drums, Annie Paine on bass (the 3 women grew up together, evident in their musical connectivity). James Townsend brings it together with guitars and the male vocals. All play together and harmonize for one sound.

They have a brand-new self-titled CD release, from which we debuted the MTK protest song, “Knights Of The Underworld” on our radio show last week for the 4th of July. It’s an eclectic and different album! 6 songs from the CD were included in the FM broadcast today, plus the 5 live in-studio versions of songs that also appear on the compact disc. We’ll be sure to play more tracks on Honest Tunes Radio.

My-Tea Kind played a set of live music, in the Honest Tunes Radio studios at KXUA Fayetteville, 88.3 FM in Northwest Arkansas, and on our live webcast Sunday July 9th, 2006, at 2PM Central Time. They played 5 songs with acoustic and electric instruments including washboard, electric guitar and bass, and snare drum. I was able to record the show using the iRiver T10, for an mp3 podcast. Check back soon in our Podcast section (or refresh this post).

Some of the questions on the interview include… the history of the band and the 3 sisters, instrumentation, their hometown of Tahlequah and the venue Roxie’s Roost, MTK’s impressions of Fayetteville and the band’s local cheerleaders, singing in French, the conotations of being knights of the underworld, “My-Tea Kind” the new self-titled album, and how the band’s name is spelled.

My-Tea Kind’s next concert in Fayetteville is scheduled for August 16, at George’s Majestic Lounge [LINK]. They’re also newly added on the bill for the Mulberry Mountain Harvest Music Festival, September 22-23 over yonder a ways in Ozark, Arkansas.

Southern Bitch - Snake In The Grass CD cover
This was my July 4th radio show this year, some of it tounge-in-cheek for independence day themes, but really a lot of thoughtful and honest songs and individual songwriter perspectives. The first hour was excerpts from a radio special about Ralph Stanley singing the songs of the Carter family on the tribute CD, A Distant Land To Roam. We aired the complete Ralph Stanley program last Sunday. The second hour was a mix of Independence Day songs and stretches that seemed to fit the fireworks-shootin’…. including a heavy rock segment with 4 songs segued by Southern Bitch (the opening theme on their album Snake In The Grass: “True Born Leader > Don’t You Think It’s Time > Tell Me / I Won’t Follow” crossfading into Stockholm Syndrome’s biting “American Fork” from Holy Happy Hour. Things exploded.

At the encore end of the hour I honored requests of Scagnetti’s for the new Dixie Chicks protest anthem in the form of “Not Ready To Make Nice”, and Briffle’s top call for a flag-wavin’ Fourth Of July song: the Dead’s “U.S. Blues” believe it or not - also requested by Bubz in Santa Cruz.
