First Radio Show On KHDX

In 1992 Dgold broadcasted his first live FM radio show from the campus of Hendrix College in Conway at Arkansas Governor’s School, mid-summer 1992. Co-DJ’s included Matt Sollers (where’re Ari Levy, Jason, John, and Matt now? New York? England?). Some of the bands we played included Widespread Panic [LINK] - Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ - Follow For Now - Beanland - Camper Van - all from the southeast (college rock in the early 90’s), alongside Green Day, Beastie Boys, Tribe Called Quest, Primus, Native American flute music, trucker songs, weird stuff, and local bands (friends like Chino Horde). At least one somewhat silly SETLIST is preserved from this summer’s weekly experimentation and free-reign on the airwaves of this low-watt station, which was best picked up over cable in the dorms listening to speakers on a tv (or perhaps a car passng by or parked in the lot nearest the radio station above the cafeteria), on this wooded college campus of Hendrix in Conway, Arkansas.

KHDX was the full-time college student radio station (of a small college) during the regular semester. It wasn’t staffed in the summer. We got a quick introduction to the controls and then we were left to make our music go. We put it out there any which way we could. Records, tapes, CD’s, microphones, a board and free time. The radio show was promoted with handmade poster art and found-art creations posted in the dorms, and around Conway. Dgold nearly got into hot water for allegedly misappropriating someone’s art from the Governor’s School art class (the issue settled). Music makes things better.
