There is nothing more magical for our students than hearing owls call or coyotes howl in the dark of night on a first hike under the stars, squeezing though the cracks of a huge 15 foot boulder on the hiking trail or examining an Ozark mud puppy on the floor of a cave. The Ozark Natural Science Center is a private, non-profit residential field science facility located in northwest Arkansas. ONSC provides hands-on science and conservation learning experiences for more than 4,000 school children annually. The mission of the Ozark Natural Science Center is to enhance the understanding, appreciation and stewardship of the Ozark natural environment.

Alaskan bluegrass band visits Walton Arts Center
Northwest Arkansas (March 18, 2010) – Alaskan-based quintet Bearfoot brings a fresh approach to bluegrass and acoustic music to Walton Arts Center on Thursday, April at 8pm and Friday, April 9 at 8pm and 10pm. Appearing in the Starrlight Music Club, Bearfoot will perform music ranging from evocative three-part harmonies to original songs and bluesy covers of contemporary tunes. Tickets range from $16 to $26 and can be purchased by calling the Walton Arts Center Box Office at 479.443.5600 or by visiting waltonartscenter.org.
Hailing from the great state of Alaska, Bearfoot features twin fiddles, quick-picking mandolin and guitar, upright bass, soothing harmonic vocals and an exuberant stage presence. Their distinctive take on bluegrass possesses a rootsy yet unmistakably modern quality that is taking the bluegrass world by storm. Described by BluegrassJournal.comas “collaborative, uplifting, energetic, haunting, beautiful and inspired,” Bearfoot’s sound is as expansive and intriguing as their home state
Formed in 1999 by music camp counselors, Bearfoot began by playing bluegrass festivals across the Northwest. In 2001, the band’s popularity skyrocketed when they earned one of roots music’s most exalted honors by being crowned champions of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition – a distinction they share with popular bands such as the Dixie Chicks and Nickel Creek. Bearfoot has spent the last decade touring extensively, making appearances at major festivals and releasing four albums; most recently, their critically-acclaimed CD, “Doors and Windows.” Comprised of Kate Hamre (acoustic bass), Mike Mickelson (guitar), Jason Norris (mandolin), Angela Oudean (fiddle), and Odessa Jorgensen (vocals/fiddle), Bearfoot’s rise from super talented music camp counselors to an established national touring band has been nothing short of meteoric. Bearfoot is sponsored by Popcorn Indiana. For more information about this performance or others, contact the Walton Arts Center Box Office by calling 479.443.5600 or by visiting waltonartscenter.org.

Approximately 20,000 students and teachers from 30 school districts participate annually in arts learning programs at Walton Arts Center, and over 300 volunteers donate more than 15,000 hours of time each year to its operations. Walton Arts Center presents entertainers and artists from around the world including Broadway musicals, renowned dance companies, international artists, up-and-coming jazz musicians and more.
