THE BANDS :
Punch Brothers – Live Acoustic at KXUA Honest FM studios* (that’s what the * means)
The Punch Brothers are in town to play a show tonight at The Walton Arts Center on Dickson Street in Fayetteville. They were happy to stop by the studio and play 3 songs for you first, for free.
The Punch Brothers Blog posted an announcement about this podcast. “Fayetteville radio session, Tuesday, 25 November 2008. Thanks to the webcast provided by the Honest Tunes program hosted on KXUA – Fayetteville, you can hear Punch Brothers’ interview and on air performances archived here”
They’re like a classical string quintet with bluegrass instrumentation, original songs and varied covers, and they’re very interesting, unique and talented. Chris Thile (prounounced: THEE-LEE rhymes with stealy) originally from Nickel Creek is the band leader and mandolinist. Noam Pikelny plays banjo. Noam has played live on Honest Tunes before with Leftover Salmon. Chris Eldridge from The Infamous Stringdusters, whom we have also played on the radio show, is on acoustic guitar with Punch Brothers. Now, Honest Tunes ‘ good friend Greg Garrison is not out with the band on bass this tour (but he is on their album Punch). Paul Kowert is the bassist for Punch Brothers here. Gabe on violin, you might call it fiddle in the vernacular of our times. They’re a nice bunch of guys, all serious about their study and technique of music.Punch Brothers – The Blind Leaving The Blind video
I recorded a video clip of the band playing live on the radio, all around a single mic. Here is the clip on YouTube,
On this video Chris Thile (mandolin), Noam Pikelny in the foreground (banjo), Gabe Witcher (violin), Chris Eldridge (guitar), and Paul Kowert (stand up bass) play an acoustic single-mic version of The Blind Leaving The Blind for the Honest Tunes radio audience. It is an excerpt of the radio show podcast.
For the complete 12-minutes of The Blind Leaving The Blind Movement One, check for my podcast mp3 audio above (click Play In Pop Up) on Honest.FM or search for Honest Tunes in iTunes, Yahoo podcasts, Odeo, Podcast Alley, Podcast Pickle, and other mp3 blog hosting sites that syndicate this show.
Excerpt from the band’s biographies
- Chris Thile… mandolin… songwriter…. has solo albums and a long career with Nickel Creek, then the How To Grow A Woman From The Ground album, then Punch Brothers emerged
- Guitarist Chris Eldridge was a founding member of the Infamous Stringdusters and occasionally sits in with his dad Bens band, The Seldom Scene;
- bassist Paul Kowert, who joined the group this fall (just recently!), is from Madison, Wisconsin and studied at The Curtis Institute of Music with Edgar Meyer;
- and banjo player Noam Pikelny who has performed and recorded as a solo artist and has collaborated with acoustic music heavyweights John Cowan and Tony Trischka.
- Violinist Gabe Witcher, a life-long friend of Thiles, is a sought-after session man whose fiddle playing has been featured on the soundtrack of films ranging from Toy Story to Brokeback Mountain. Witcher also has recorded with a range of artists from Willie Nelson to Beck to Randy Newman and played in dobro master Jerry Douglas band for six years.
- Note the good friend of Honest Tunes , bassist of Leftover Salmon and Punch Brothers bassist: Greg Garrison, was the bassist on Punch Brothers’ first CD, and has only recently departed from the band. Greg is spending time with his family and continuing his music. Paul is with Punch Brothers on bass now and they are on a big tour!
Text from the pre-show announcements: Special show announcement! The Punch Brothers will stop by the KXUA studio in person for an Honest FM interview and possible live acoustic set on the air, Saturday around 2 or 2:30 PM (Central). Tune in!! EDIT 2: They played a few songs on the air! I got a recording and it sounded great, so I will plan to post an mp3 audio of this later, check back.
I will try to record the radio performance for a possible podcast mp3 release. Check back later for the setlist, more pictures, and audio files.

Are they going to play?

One more question, how do they like Fayetteville

a couple excerpts from 10 Things You May Not Know About The Punch Brothers CD,
2. The lyrics from Part One of The Blind Leaving the Blind’s first movement come not from the perspective of the story’s main character, but rather from its main character’s departing love interest.
3. Punch Brothers all refer to the last four minutes and twenty five seconds (Part Two) of the first movement as “Red Handed”.
4. The use of the figure (and the figure itself) introduced by the fiddle at 7:40 in the second movement is a timid tip of the hat to the second time through the main theme of the first movement of Brahms’ Fourth Symphony.

Damn, I wish I could’ve heard this live. I saw Nickel Creek a few times at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and they were good. Chris Thile is legit on mandolin. They did a set at TBF with Glen Phillips of Toad the Wet Sprocket that was fantastic (2001 I believe)

DG, I love it!!! Punch Bros. are one of my fave bands. Thile is one amazing mando picker and he has really surrounded himself with some fine musicians to create this project. And it really gels too…not just Chris’s band with a bunch of backing musicians, but a cohesive band with its own sound.
Any idea why Greg Garrison is no longer playing bass with these guys?
BTW, Daniel, you are one lucky guy – you get to meet some great musicians in the studio…kudos and cheers to you my friend!

November 30, 2008 · By Ted Dancin’
EXCERPT:
Last Saturday, Punch Brothers played at the Walton Arts Center. They were also the center of our most recent contest here on the Flyer.
If you didn’t make it to the show and are kicking yourself for missing a good one, you can at least head over to the Honest Tunes website and check out a whole slew of goodies that KXUA’s Daniel Gold has waiting for you.
The Punch Brothers performed a live acoustic mini-set on the Honest Tunes radio show. Available at the website is a photo, an interview that includes 3 songs, a video clip of “The Blind Leaving The Blind”, and a complete 35-minute Podcast mp3. Not bad!

Garrison Keillor is a little late on this one. We all heard Chris perform “Dead Leaves” a week earlier on Fayetteville Student Radio KXUA (Honest.fm)
Dgold had the Punch Bros. live in the studio just a few hours before we all went to see them at the WAC. Check out the honest.fm podcast.
Good stuff right there.
