    NMAS Upcoming Shows This Week:
(Before Luther goes on the road with The Black Crowes for a big tour)

    # 3/11 Fayetteville, AR
    # 3/12 Dallas, TX
    # 3/13 SXSW, Austin, TX
    # 3/14 SXSW, Austin, TX
    # 3/15 Lafayette, LA

  2. James Says:

How difficult is it going from the frontman/lead singer singing songs you wrote and covering the rhythm AND lead guitar parts to being just the lead guitarist on someone else’s songs? Is that transition difficult at all? Any particular reason you haven’t been singing at all with the Crowes on this current tour?

  3. James Says:

How much are Chris and Rich direct his playing — are they suggesting “play slide on this song” or “I think you should play a Strat on this song and a Les Paul on that song” or are you just getting to pick and choose things as you wish?

  4. earlgonefishn Says:

Ask him if he knows whether or not Warren really wrote Mr. High & Mighty about Chris and if so does he think he’s a prima donna, albeit an extremely talented one?

  5. vanark Says:

You seem to be playing a lot of guitars with the Black Crowes that you don’t play with the Allstars. What is the “PRIVATE” guitar and what are its origins? That one looks like it has some history to it. What about the clear body guitar - Rich has one also?

  6. LeRoy Says:

I heard that Luther and Josh Clark (of Tea Leaf Green) have talked about starting a punk band together. When is this going to happen?

  7. Sal Paradise Says:

The North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic was a blast last year.
Will NMA be playing there again this year?
Also, why was there a hole in his amp at the TBC show @ the Tab?
Was it a Hernando “Blow Out”?

  8. amonro Says:

Can you describe your songwriting process, particularly for the songs on Hernando? I know there was some co-writing involved. Do you write when the mood strikes, or do you try to be more disciplined about it? Do you get writing done on the bus?

  9. B. Johnson Says:

Curious how you are liking playing with the Black Crowes. How hard was the transition to mainly a lead player. Main Question…have you made any major equipment changes since playing with the Crowes…guitars/Amps/Heads ??
    keep on keepin on
    Britt

  10. barrylincoln Says:

How much of a challenge has it been to learn The Black Crowes’ back catalog?

  11. preston Says:

Luther, a quick question about early 07 and the Piano. Have you given it much thought to incorporated it into another tour? If so anybody in particular that you have enjoyed sitting in on keys? Kirk Clayton and Lucas Leigh come to mind that sat in on last years tour.

And I agree a Josh Clark and Luther D guitar battle is in a must.

  12. Matt from the Bluff Says:

Damn Vanark - you took my question.

Luther: I noticed your mic stand disappeared after the first show with the Crowes. Any chance it’ll return at some point?

Also, when will you Cody and Chris start recording Chew’s Soul album?

  13. Galen from WV (Kingharvest) Says:

    Luther,

What music have you been listening to lately? Some of your favorite new & older bands??

Also what is the Huck Finn reference about why you never sign anything in a red pen or marker?

Festivals this summer? Kenny Brown Picnic? Natchez Balloon Festival?

  14. Senath Says:

Will all the other folk/love songs that did not make the cut for Hernando ever be released?

Have you ever thought about a tribute album to your mentors?

What makes you such a chameleon?

Won’t taking such a long hiatus from singing live affect your vocal chords?

  15. Senath Says:

Where did the lyric “stick to you closer than Jesus to the cross” arise from? It’s one of the most cutting edge lines I’ve ever heard.

Well…in Blow Out the line about not needing “the needle but I crave the spoon” is also pretty intense. I asked my friend about it. She said a big thing with heroine is the preparation to shoot up is the really addictive part, it gets your body prepared for what is to come. This line could be interpreted as getting emotionally and chemically prepared for anything. Love, death, heroine…It apply’s to another person’s question of what is a “blow out” Cause it’s the same song.

Luther drives himself really hard. I want to ask about his mother. I want to know if he was similar to a caged beast in utero and as a child…

What would he do with himself if he stopped for one millionth of a second? Not that he would.

  16. Senath Says:

Where is your guitar tech? I noticed at the BC show in Sommerville Mass a WHOLE LOT of critical times you were re-tuning your guitar. A result of running your own equipment the right way was that your back was turned 60% of the time. That is a big time no-no for stage presence. I paid to see you which makes you an equal and then some asset to this Band. What gives??????????????????? Why don’t they notice or care?

  17. steven pittman Says:

Tell us about the album name “Hernando”? Is there anything special about the name? Do you still live there? And the album cover? Tell us about that.

You have mentioned a difference of approach to recording “Hernando” between you and the producer, Jim Dickinson. Was it difficult to say “I really want to do it this way?”

What’s it like playing with Alvin Youngblood Hart? Have you seen the movie “The Great Debaters”? Great movie!

I understand that you are an artist as well? Have you been painting much lately?

  18. steven pittman Says:

Where does the name “Zebra Ranch” come from? (Jim’s studio)

  19. Chris Says:

I sawe Luther in Dallas in March 2008, HE KILLED, shocked by how great He is, can’t wait to see him with the Crowes

  20. sandy Says:

From the Amorica, Black Crowes board ~

that was one fuckin awesome interview, thanks for posting this!

Luther played the "didlly-bo" on the last show I saw, for "Miss boweezil", it was sweeet. That whole interview was great, it was interesting to hear Luther’s comments about the Allstars, the Crowes, and his roots, and I thought the DJ asked some really good questions. Luther has that raw growl laugh that just sounds cool..

    Some nice takeaways:
Sounds like the Crowes have plans for a big summer tour
Luther will continue to be in BOTH bands, and got advice from Haynes and Trucks, that’s awesome..
I want those other songs from the "22" not released on Hernando, anyone have em?
Yes, Luther clearly said that "Marc said I could play his guitars"
Luther mentioned that he won’t be singing w/ the Crowes, thats just a shame, but oh well.. :) (we still have the NMA’s!

Luther is just plain cool shit! :)

  21. Senath Says:

Just matched up with this interview. Nice one.
The interview stops at Horseshoe…Right before the song I’ve never heard???
Bob Marley used to play the fife as well. That Othar! :wooley:
