Y’all know North Mississippi Allstars [LINK] are playing this week in our suburban regions, this Tuesday 2-19 in Dallas at the fabulous Granada, this Wednesday 2-20 at the Rev Room in Little Rock.

Good news Fayetteville! They’ll be back around, in our town very soon. Just Announced:
NORTH MISSISSIPPI ALLSTARS - GEORGE’S MAJESTIC LOUNGE [LINK] - FAYETTEVILLE - TUESDAY MARCH 11TH!

Tuesday is the day of Honest Tunes Radio Show. On Tuesday 3-11-08 we will dedicate 2 hours of Honest Tunes Radio Show to the music of NMAS and associated projects. I’ve invited the band members to visit the studio for an interview if possible, so stay tuned for more on that.

In other NMAS news, lead guitarist Luther Dickinson became a member of The Black Crowes recently, as we announced on the Radio Show when he officially joined them. Even before that, Luther had been working with the Crowes on the recording of the new album Black Crowes album, Warpaint (2008) — which will be the Crowes’ first album since 2001.

Luther Dickinson has said he plans to continue with NMAS as well, and to boot: NMAS has a great new studio album just-released called Hernando (2008), that will be featured on an upcoming edition of Honest Tunes Radio. Listen for our review and favorite tracks in the next couple of weeks. NMAS also put out the fan-and-web-only acoustic CD, Song Of The South Presents: Mississippi Folk Music, Volume One, by The North Mississippi Allstars, with Chris Chew and Cody Dickinson taking vocals in addition to Luther’s, their Dad, Jim Dickinson sitting in on piano, and a couple of fine instrumentals. This acoustic CD was named #4 on Honest Tunes Radio’s Top 10 Albums of 2007. The tour they did with that album, acoustic format, and Mavis Staples and Charlie Musslewhite, also was my favorite concert of last year and probably one of the coolest tours, that made a solid run of theaters.

Look out for Luther going worldwide next, as he will join the Crowes international tour about to embark in March.

Here’s some info about the new Black Crowes CD, Warpaint, which has Luther Dickinson jamming along with the Robinson brothers.

In addition to the re-launch of Crowes Myspace, Facebook, etc., the Black Crowes uploaded a new video promo for “Goodbye Daughters Of The Revolution” and a new widget. Plus, http://www.theblackcrowes.com/ now has a “countdown to release date” ticker.

This controversy was kind of interesting from the perspective of journalism in consideration of new releases. I try to keep this in mind on the blog & only recommend bands that I’ve listened to. When it’s something I have not heard yet, I state it as News of what’s coming and say that we will preview the album (first on my own to select tracks, and then I’ll present my audio preview of the favorite songs on the radio show). I certainly would not give an album a number of stars ***** or rank it without hearing it first.

Read on, for one publicist’s apparently legitimate incredulity, this was emailed to me today,

MAXIM MAGAZINE REVIEWS ALBUM WITHOUT HEARING IT

How is it that a magazine can review an entire album–and assign a star rating to it–without actually hearing the album?

Case in point: the “review” of Warpaint–the new album by THE BLACK CROWES–in the March issue of Maxim magazine. The writer–who has not heard the album since advance CDs were not made available–wrote what appears to be a disparaging assessment anyway, citing “it hasn’t left Chris Robinson and the gang much room for growth.”

Incredulously, the magazine gave the album a two and a half star rating–although neither the writer nor the editor could have heard more than one song (the single “Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution”).

When approached for an explanation, the magazine described the review as “an educated guess preview.” Huh?

Black Crowes manager Pete Angelus says, “Maxim’s actions seem to completely lack journalistic integrity and intentionally mislead their readership. When confronted with the fact that they never heard the album they are claiming to ‘review’ in their music section–with a star rating, no less–they attempt to explain that it was an ‘educated guess.’ In an email correspondence, Maxim went on to state: ‘Of course, we always prefer to (sic) hearing music, but sometimes there are big albums that we don’t want to ignore that aren’t available to hear, which is what happened with the Crowes. It’s either an educated guess preview or no coverage at all, so in this case we chose the former.’”

Angelus continued, “It speaks directly to the lack of the publication’s credibility. In my opinion, it’s a disgrace to the arts, journalism, critics, the publication itself and the public. What’s next–Maxim’s concert reviews of shows they never attended, book reviews of books never read and film reviews of films never seen?”

Whatis wrong with the publisher? Reviwing a record they didn’t hear is criminal. That shoul not be taken lightly. If u continue to buy maxim, u r as foolish as the foolers! That is simply unbelievable!
