On 10-13 click Play In Pop-Up or Download to hear Panic’s new song “Up All Night” here from
Honest Tunes or on
the band’s homepage audio player. The high-res mp3 was released for
free download from livewidespreadpanic on Oct. 15 and is shared here by permission. The single is a preview of WSP’s upcoming new album.
Jojo originated the songwriting of “Up All Night” but JB sings it. There are horns and back-up singers, kind of a Muscle Shoals sound. WSP recorded it in the Bahamas with producer Terry Manning (who has also produced for Al Green – and it shows on this track). This is basically Panic’s first new original song released with Jimmy Herring on lead guitar. It sounds promising for the next album. They decided to release the mp3 for free on any/all websites by permission of the band – that’s pretty cool, and it allows me to include the mp3 with this week’s Honest Tunes Radio Podcast. According to the press release, “The band’s intention is to offer the track free for download on all music sites permitting, with no strings attached.” Panic satisfied their recording contract with Sanctuary Records & now they are an independent band again, with their own Widespread Records.

There’s not a lot of guitar solo here, but you can bet they’ll add that part in concert. Jimmy’s all over the articulation of the melody, with some pretty catchy and comfortable licks, to my ear; I guess he’ll be called on to cover the horn parts later live. There’s some chunky/clunky rhythm guitar from JB that underpins and synchs-up with the horns, keys, and Jimmy’s parts — I like the sound of 2 guitars. I like to hear Jimmy playing like this, more of a Little Feat kind of style instead of a fusion shredder or psychedlic drip. It’s good for the Gulf Coast swagger of this tune. Confidence in laziness, making an art of laid-back assertion. Another reviewer thought it called Van Morrison to mind. -DG

“Up All Night†Going To Radio and Available for Free Download on October 15
Band Continues Fall Tour and add New Year’s Dates, December 30th & 31st at Philips Arena, Atlanta GA
As fans await details on the new Widespread Panic studio album, the band has announced that it will release an early track to radio titled “Up All Nightâ€. The band’s intention is to offer the track free for download on all music sites permitting, with no strings attached. The song will be available to download free of charge starting October 15th http://www.widespreadpanic.com. The single will offer a sneak preview of Panic’s 10th studio album slated for full release in Spring 2008 on Widespread Records.
Recorded earlier this year, the yet to be titled CD was produced and mastered by Terry Manning (Led Zeppelin, Lenny Kravitz, ZZ Top, and Al Green) at his Compass Point recording studio in the Bahamas, Nassau. This will be the first release with the band’s new guitarist, the legendary Jimmy Herring, who began playing with the band in Fall 06. Herring has played with such luminaries as The Allman Brothers Band, The Dead, Phil Lesh and Friends and the Aquarium Rescue Unit.
Currently in the midst of their fall tour, Panic’s infamous Halloween show will take place in Asheville, NC for the first time. Halloween is inevitably one of most anticipated shows of the year as the band is known for their outrageous stage productions and costumes. This year is no exception with the show selling out 8,000 capacity Civic Centre in just minutes. Past Halloween shows have included themes such as Mars Attacks, where a space ship crash landed onto the stage, and a Mardi Gras themed Bourbon Street. The annual end of year Tunes for Tots benefit show and New Year’s Eve dates will also be announced shortly.
Panic kicked off this year’s summer tour playing their 6th headlining slot at Bonnaroo, a festival that has grown to draw over 90,000 fans. In addition, Sony recently released a Choice Cuts CD featuring a hand picked selection of classic tunes from Panic’s formative years on Capricorn records. Widespread Panic is also honored to contribute the John Lennon song “Crippled Inside†for the Instant Karma: The Campaign to Save Darfur CD which is out now on Warner Bros. Records in conjunction with Amnesty International.
Widespread Panic first came together around the University of Georgia in 1986, when the band’s original guitarist, Michael Houser, introduced vocalist/guitarist John Bell to the joys of improvisation, following a musical conversation wherever it leads. With bassist Dave Schools, drummer Todd Nance, and later percussionist Domingo Ortiz keyboardist John Hermann, they hit the road, winning new fans at each stop. Together, they forged roots rock, blues and boogie into an aesthetic all its own. Without benefit of substantial radio or MTV airplay and other trappings of the pop world’s starmaking machine, their popularity grew steadily. After years of relentless touring, they are one of the biggest ticket selling bands on the road today. Road warriors for over 20 years, the band has sold out venues across the country, ranging from New York’s venerable Madison Square Garden to Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre (where they hold the record for the most sold-out shows). Panic has sold over 3 million albums, and released a total of 15 CDs and five DVDs (including Live at Oak Mountain, which is certified Gold).
