Dear Listeners, Some uncertainty for online listeners in this Age of the Intertron: The radio show and podcast will continue unflinchingly. KXUA’s weekly webcast on Tuesdays might have to stop at some point (who knows when, could be any time) because of new regulations. Here is an excerpt of the message from KXUA station management about the impending shut-down of live internet radio streams:

“{Pending} all internet radio streams will be forced to shut down or pay exorbitant royalty rates… Only major corporate radio stations will be able to afford internet streaming radio. KXUA has a lot of listeners online and so this will affect us. Our stream… to be shut down…. There is a bill in congress right now to hopefully reverse this. The bill is called the Internet Radio Equality Act (HR 2060) and is sponsored by Jay Inslee (D-WA) and Donald Manzullo (R-IL) and cosponsored by over 100 others in congress, but not by any from Arkansas. Please, take 5 minutes to send an email to our senators and ask them to support this bill. Tell them you support student rado from the University of Arkansas and the student and professor DJ’s at KXUA.”

I’m strongly in favor of compensating artists for their creativity (which is how royalties should work: to benefit the musicians), but I think the new royalty rates would be unreasonable and disadvantageous for artists — particularly smaller acts and independent bands — if the new royalties force college radio stations to stop webcasting, which is apparently what is happening. That takes away audience and cuts off indie communication channels. I’ll keep you posted and I will make every effort to continue bringing you free music downloads with the artists’ blessings here on the radio blog..

This could be one of the last live webcasts, so tune in if you’re online tonight ~

    ted rockwell:

I am sorry to hear the webcasts are going away – maybe everyone should just NOT STOP broadcasting and not pay the increased royalties.

A super sweet Brokedown Palace would be nice as would ‘Wont get Fooled Again”. And of course Cream Puff War – DAS version pluhleeze!

Good luck – continue to keep all the people’s ears nimble and happy.
