Bruce Hampton & the Aquarium Rescue Unit, Allman Brothers Band, Phil Lesh Quintet, The Dead, Little Feat, Frogwings, Gov’t Mule, Widespread Panic, ARU>WSP jam, Jazz Is Dead, Jazz Is Spread, Justice League Of America, Endangered Species, New Earth Mud, Black Crowes, Blues Traveler, Day By The River, Project Z, Derek Trucks Band, The Codetalkers, Herring Rogers Sipe, KVHW, Phish.
Yep, Jimmy has jammed with all-of-the-above, as a member / fill-in / or special guest. I’ll spin selections of my favorites on my radio show tonite.
Widespread Panic in-transition in 2006, announced last week that Jimmy Herring is joining WSP on lead guitar starting at Radio City Music Hall in NYC in September for Fall Tour.

Words to announce:
Fasten your seatbelts, for the next few hours Jimmy Herring plays guitar on every song. Widespread Panic announced on their website that Jimmy Herring will join the band as lead guitarist starting at Radio City Music Hall in September.
Thats a follow up to Jimmys roles subbing for Dicky Betts in the Allman Brothers and the Jerry Garcia Slot in The Dead. But those arent Jimmys original credentials. He is a jazz, rock and fusion guitarist who can play almost any genre of music, as you can hear all genres mixed together in this live concert recording of Col. Bruce Hampton & the Aquarium Rescue Unit.
awesome display of technique from the Nicest guy you’ll ever meet
Find out all the songs and bands tonite on dgold.info/radio
Hope you’re ready to hear Jimmy play with a variety of other artists in different styles
Project Z – improv Herring Sipe and the late great bassist Ricky Keller. Sipe from ARU, out touring now with another band HRS and we’ll hear from them later in the program
This is their self-titled debut, they also managed to complete a posthumous album Lincoln Memorial on Terminus Records
Jimmy cover song Fusion Tribute >”Meeting of the Spirits”
Endanger Species – jimmy original credits
Doesn’t matter what style of music whether it’s bluegrass funk rock, or jazz fusion, you can always tell it’s Herring on guitar by his clear tone and his unique touch. But one thing you don’t hear often is Jimmy on acoustic like he plays on this Endangered Species “Folley”
That was Jimmy playing with a former member of WSP, keyboardist T Lavitz, in Endangered Species. They also played together in Jazz Is Dead, an all instrumental band interpreting GD songs, and Justice League of America
Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, and Jimmy Herring are a trio of guitarists who have special guested and helped one another at every turn of their careers, and both older guitarists mentored young Derek. For another studio recording, here Jimmy Herring joins the Derek Trucks Band on their album 1998 “Out Of The Madness” where Herring has co-credits on 3 tracks. We’ll hear Younk Funk and Spillway, you need to pick up this album to hear the 8 minute version of Kickin’ Back with dual guitars by Derek and Jimmy..
We started the show off with ARU recorded live in 1992. That last song was Jimmy Herring with Gov’t Mule on their live quadruple-CD set from New Years 1998 at the Roxy in ATL. For the next hour we’ll feature more live jams of Herring sitting in with bands including Phish, Widespread panic, The Allman Brothers, Phil Lesh Quintet, The Codetalkers, Herring Rogers Sipe, and an amazing jam with KVHW, so stay tuned. This is an excerpt from a jam session with the John Popper Band on Led Zeppelin’s When The Leveee Breaks.
Jimmy also joined a jamband supergroup with Popper, Derek Trucks and his uncle Butch Trucks. Next we’ll hear Jimmy jam with another band at The Roxy, this is Phish from 1993.
In the last block of songs on the Jimmy Herring Feature show, we heard Jimmy jam super fast guitar with Trey Anastasio in Phish in 1993. Stay tuned for live music from Herring with KVHW, PLQ, ABB and more.
In 2006, Widespread panic announced that herring is joining the band to fill the huge hole left by the passing of a good friend of all these bands, Mr. Michael Houser. Looking back in Panic history, Herring also jammed with Houser and the band back in 1993 as we’ll hear on the next song.
Herring has a long history of jamming with Panic, starting with the infamous band-to-band segues of ARU > WSP around the time they developed the idea for the HORDE tour in 92 and 93, along with contemporaries Blues Traveler and Phish. In 1998 as a member of Jazz Is Dead, Herring joined Panic on stage for a segment affectionately known as Jazz Is Spread. Last week Panic announced that Jimmy Herring will join the band on lead guitar starting with the shows at Radio City Music Hall in September. Herring hasn’t guested with Panic since Houser passed away, but the band is rumored to be rehearsing together in the coming weeks. Let’s hear another song of WSP from 1993 with special guests from ARU.
Some of the Allmans related projects Herring has done including filling in for his own guitar hero Dicky Betts in ABB, jamming with Gov’t Mule and Derek Trucks Band as we heard earlier tonight, and forming the supergroup Frogwings. This is ABB from the year 2000 with “Don’t Want You No More”
GD projects: wasn’t really so much a Dead head, more into southern music and jazz, even Little Feat and ABB. T Lavitz from Dixie Dregs and WSP, and Billy Cobham called him about Jazz Is Dead. Later Jimmy’s buddies who had played with Lesh, Warren and Derek, recommended jimmy and he joined PLQ, P&F and the GD reformation called The Dead
Some of the most popular and well-known live bands have relied on Jimmy Herring to cover crucial roles, filling in for Dicky Betts in ABB and Jerry Garcia in The Dead. Now Herring is joining Widespread Panic to step in for the late great Michael Houser and the recent vacancy of George McConnell. Jimmy always does a great job of studying the music, paying respect to the original artists, and hitting all the right licks — while giving it his own spin. On this next song listen to Herring and Haynes playing Garcia on St. Stephen > Not Fade.
That was PLQ from 2001. In recent months before joining WSP, North Carolina’s Jimmy Herring stayed busy bringing things full circle playing again with Hamptonites in The Codetalkers and Herring Rogers and Sipe. Here’s a song called “Nash” by Bobby Lee Rogers, performed by Col Bruce Hampton and The Codetalkers with special guest Jimmy Herring.
The un-named group that barely got to make a run before Panic recruited Herring. Unfortunately Herring Rogers and Sipe (with Fountain and Van Allen) is on hold, but that means we get to see shows with Herring in Panic, and Bobby Lee returns to focus on The Codetalkers touring as a trio. Let’s listen to a song by Herring Rogers and Sipe recorded 2 months ago.
Just a few of the bands Herring has played with that we didn’t get to include in the radio show tonight are The Dead, Little Feat, Frogwings, ARU>WSP jam, Jazz Is Dead, Justice League, New Earth Mud, Black Crowes, Herring Rogers Sipe
This is KVHW, when Jazz is Dead opened, and Ray White didn’t show up for the gig. Last minute, Kimock invites Herring to sit in, and he proceeds to match Kimock note for note on tricky songs like this 17-minute “Tangled Hangers.” Listen to SK run through the long musical phrasing that underpins the tune, and then Herring spits it back with a perfect twist. Amazing dual and awesome display of technique.

This Lockwood would be bad ass to try and hear Panic pull off.

In reference to your 2009 follow up Jimmy special on your radio show, I’d like to suggest/request that you play ‘Under the Radar jam’. There are several good ones out there, including Red Rocks & Milwaukee, but I think the one from 10-10-08 is the best I’ve heard (Driving>Disco>Under The Radar>Driving).
The reason I suggest this song is because it is 2 ‘firsts’ with Jimmy on guitar.
1. First instrumental to be written with Jimmy
2. First ‘on-stage’ development with Jimmy, i.e., it wasn’t written in the studio like the songs off of FS.
Thanks for your show
