Martin linked to this interview podcast on the Martin Fierro Music website for the last couple months. I hope that on this interview mp3, people continuing to hear his endearing voice tell his wonderful stories will honor Martin’s suggestion in his public letter where he wrote: “Being the kind of person that I am, I have always shared my love, laughter and tears through the music I have played for over 50 years now. Please reflect on that and hold it in your thoughts and prayers for me and my extended family…” For me, every time I hear his sax like a Legion Of Mary show or a Zero tape, I’ll think of his smile — his talking voice, his sense of humor and ways of interacting with people, his personality, friendship, and presence — while I take in the uniquely lyrical sax phrasing that he would come up with on the spot.

Martin Fierro rarely grants interviews, but he is a story-teller, full of wild memories from years of playing shows with Jerry Garcia in Legion Of Mary and JGB, and recording Wake Of The Flood with Grateful Dead. Returning to Fayetteville after many visits here with Zero and various Steve Kimock jams, Martin offered to tell some of his stories on the air, live on Honest Tunes Radio Show’s exclusive interview on Jerry’s birthday.
Happy Birthday Jerry Garcia… August 1, 1942 - August 9, 1995. Thanks for the music. In celebration check out the podcasts of Martin Fierro telling stories about the Legion Of Mary days and many more very Jerry memories.

Rest In Peace ~ * Martin Fierro * January 18, 1942 - March 13, 2008
The great saxophone and even greater human-being, Martin Fierro, passed away today. (It’s pronounced “Marteeeeen” and his nickname was “The Meester”.) He was a member of Legion Of Mary with Jerry Garcia and Merl Saunders, and also recorded the sax parts for Grateful Dead’s stellar 1973 album “Wake Of The Flood”. He was a member of Zero with Steve Kimock. Martin jammed with dozens of other bands since he first picked up music at the age of 5. But it was his smile, voice (accent), his attitude and way of interacting with other people that is really what I will remember the most about this awesome person. Go on in Peace, Martin. I hope he’s jamming with Jerry again already.

Pardon this news for being a few days late.
Although we try really hard to catch all the music news we can, this one slipped by. And, if I hadn’t been on the Honest Tunes Radio Show’s Web page this morning, the news might have completely avoided me.
Which is sad, frankly, because it means there weren’t many banner headlines or national entertainment publications that decided to tell the music community something worth hearing about.
Martin Fierro, saxophonist for, among other bands, the Grateful Dead, passed away March 13 after a battle with cancer. He was 66.
The San Francisco Chronicle’s obituary can be read here.
He wasn’t a bandleader. He was a sideman, someone who played on hundreds of recordings throughout the years. The list of bands Fierro contributed to is pretty lengthy, including Zero, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Blue Cheer, Legion of Mary and more.
