THE NEW ORLEANS ALL-STARS: A Jazzfest home
team made up of some of the finest local musicians in
New Orleans (and the world). Forming the tightest
rhythm section around are New Orleans’ funk
originator, George Porter Jr. (The Meters) on the bass
and his bandmate on the drums from The Trio & MVVP,
Johnny Vidacovich (Astral Project, Robert Walter SHO).
Rounding out the All-Star lineup are Ivan Neville on
keys/vocals (Neville Brothers), the beautifully
talented Theresa Andersson on vocals/violin and Shane
Theriot on guitar (Neville Brothers, The Grease
Factor). This lineup first came together in 2004’s
event and the music they created was so completely
epic that they’ve been back every year since!
PAPA GROWS FUNK: Just imagine the chops it takes to be
voted the funkiest act in the world’s funkiest town.
Out of the sweat-drenched, hard-partying, all-night
mayhem of New Orleans comes Papa Grows Funk, winners
of Offbeat Magazine’s Funkiest Band award for two
years running. PGF is led by John Papa Gros on the
keys, guitarist June Yamagishi, saxophonist Jason
Mingledorff, bassist Marc Pero and drummer Jeffrey
Jellybean Alexander. All the requisite ingredients
for an ear-tickling musical gumbo are here: steaming
Hammond, chinky guitar, wailing sax, and, of course, a
rhythm section heavy enough to keep you anchored to
the dance floor. Following in the footsteps of the
legendary Meters, PGF keeps its music unbelievably
tight and its beats syncopated but greases it up with
loose, jazzy improvisation.-Jonathan Zwickel-Offbeat
PAPA MALI & FRIENDS: Malcolm Welbourne’s
personification as Papa Mali is a salute to his home
territory of north Louisiana. Malcolm was born in
Mississippi and raised in Shreveport, where absorbing
the blues along Bayou Pierre was just as much a matter
of course as chasing the mosquito fogging truck with
friends — and equally intoxicating. He spent his
summers with grandparents in New Orleans digging that
city’s rhythm (and blues) and after hearing the Wild
Tchoupitoulas and the Meters on the streets of New
Orleans at age eleven, he developed an early and
ongoing attachment to Crescent City funk. It was
Burning Spear’s band that gave Malcolm the nickname
Papa Mali years ago while touring with Spear and the
Killer Bees.
BIG CHIEF MONK BOUDREAUX, one of New Orleans most
legendary Mardi Gras Indians and subject of this
years Congo Square poster along with Sousafunk King,
KIRK JOSEPH, Dirty Dozen Brass Band founder and Master
of the Sousaphone, will both be joining Papa Mali at
this years Bayou Rendezvous to create even more
magic!
VINYL blends old-school funk, Latin percussion, reggae
and R&B into signature instrumental grooves.
Their live shows are notoriously high energy dance
parties that unite fans of many musical styles.
Originating in the San Francisco Bay Area over ten
years ago, Vinyl has become as tight a seven-piece
ensemble as can be found in today’s music scene.
Vinyl’s instrumentation includes the mighty Hammond
organ, piano, guitar, sax, trumpet, flute, harmonica,
congas, timbales, bass, and drums. This broad array of
sounds enables Vinyl to explore Latin rhythms with
authenticity, lay down their unique brand of reggae
and dub, and drive it all home with booty-shaking,
full-figured funk. Vinyl received a “Wammie” award for
Best International Band from San Francisco’s SF Weekly
and was voted one of the top 25 bands in the country
by a jambands.com nationwide poll. For many years
running, Vinyl has played legendary sunrise sets in
New Orleans during Jazzfest and this year they promise
to bring the heat once again.
BIG SAM’S FUNKY NATION: Presiding over his Funky
Nation is Big Sam, formerly the trombonist for the
Dirty Dozen Brass Band, who blows the funk out of his
trombone and refuses to let the audience sit still.
Between solos and trombone riffs, Big Sam second-lines
(a uniquely New Orleans style of street-dance) and
gets the crowd going both in movement and in replies
to his call-and-response MC-style. A talented group of
jazz-trained musicians makes up the Funky Nation,
bringing with them the improv-style associated with
jazz and the horn-heavy front section that’s the
hallmark of big band funk. Theirs, and Big Sam’s,
exuberant dancing and playing, afford them a rare
opportunity to let loose. Big Sam’s Funky Nation has
undeniable personality, as well as masterful chops.
Last year’s event continued the tradition of bringing
together some of the finest New Orleans musicians
together with some of top west coast and south east
artists. Once again the New Orleans All-Stars left the
crowd in awe, as did the Eric McFadden Trio, Col.
Bruce Hampton & The Codetalkers with Jimmy Herring and
Michael Ray, The Grease Factor, Little Hercules, and a
memorable Cecil P-Nut Daniels and Friends set that
featured Dale Fanning, Wally Ingram, James Whiton, CR
Gruver and a guitar onslaught from Eenor, John Michael
Rouchell, Adam Stern & Eric McFadden.
In 2004, The Bayou Rendezvous brought together
the founding members of the Aquarium Rescue Unit: Col.
Bruce Hampton (ret.), Jeff Apt. Q258 Sipe, Jimmy
Herring, Oteil Burbridge & Count M’Butu. The legendary
group came together under the moniker The Zambi
All-Stars, and played a blistering surprise set where
they were also joined by legends: Johnny Neel, Susan
Tedeschi, Rev. Jeff Mosier, David Blackmon & Bryan
Lopes. The New Orleans All-Stars also made their first
appearance in 2004 along with the Grease Factor, The
Codetalkers and The Ear Reverents.
In 2003, some of the finest musicians from both coasts
showcased the emerging sounds from both sides of the
US as the East and West Coast All-Stars. Featured
artists included the first pairing of Skerik & Mike
Dillon with Benevento & Russo and also Robert Walter,
DJ Logic, Eric Krasno, Fareed Haque, Kai Eckhardt,
Jessica Lurie and many more.
The Bayou Rendezvous has quickly grown into one of the
most memorable and unique night shows during Jazzfest
and is not to be missed!
