Honest Tunes 9-18-2003 Leftover Salmon Interview and Acoustic Set with Drew, Vince, Noam

Eventually I will get around to posting the podcast mp3 audio of all this. Meanwhile, here’s some scattered notes and transcripts.

Weary Traveler

Vince: “I think I might loiter for a while and stick some notes in your ears.” Said Vince before hanging out to DJ the station for an hour, playing eclectic music including songs from the KXUA heavy rotation and music library.

…the railroad roll
I’m waiting all around
Just awaiting to hear a show
Traveling around the country
It sure can be a pain
I’m going down the Fayetteville
Smell some turkey while I hear a train

Vince: “That’s the last song we wrote when we were down here in Fayetteville. For folks that don’t know, last time we were in town we had some deep fried turkey, down by Dave’s on Dickson. Damn good! Turkey with a side of train! Turkey and all the fixins. I’d go down to Fayetteville if I were you, that’s the place.”

Vince: “It’s a great town here, we’ve had a lot of great memories and making a bunch more everytime we come to town. It’s a good place y’all got down here. I’ll tell you, it’s worth writing about.”

Drew: Gold Hill is still not paved, so it’s the predecessor to Paving Eisenhower.

Vince: In the Ozarks, I guess you call it old-time music. That’s what having a little area, with a little bit of rural isolation, free from the mainstream culture, is what let’s these regional styles develop – back before the internet. (laughs) But I guess they’re still developing, you know. Voluntary non-participation in the mainstream culture can help save bluegrass and other forms of folk music. So anybody who’s listening to this on the computer right now, I’d just advise you to turn it off. Go play some banjo out on the back porch.
Drew: Because only you can help save bluegrass music.
Vince: This is a message from your Greater IBMA Council of Arkansas. [International Bluegrass Music Association]

Vince: It’s hard to say what this next one’s about ‘cause it’s an instrumental.

Drew: It’s called Paving Eisenhower and it’s obvious from the song that it’s about the paving of America. With those first two chords you can even feel the asphalt going down.

Vince: Actually it’s pretty good to do a song about a general that became President, here on this historic day in Arkansas when Wesley Clark announced his candidacy and entered the ring. I’d like to announce my candidacy for President – of California.

Vince: Songs are like apartments in that we live in them for 2, 3, maybe even 4 minutes at a time. Up to 20, some of that stuff.

Drew: We’re looking at Mars as a site for the next Salmonfest, since it’s so close.
Noam: But it’s far enough from Bonnaroo.
Vince: Festivals are all about the atmosphere anyway!

Drew: We wrote another train song here in Fayetteville.
