This week I’m celebrating 2 anniversaries: Total Estimated Number of Twitter Users 2009 popularity explosion Celebrating 1 year of @dgold on Twitter, and 9 years hosting Honest Tunes on KXUA. I joined Twitter when it was an offshoot of the podcast site Odeo in April 2008, getting established @dgold before the absolute explosion in popularity of this social network (see Twitter Users chart at left). I joined the KXUA development team, actually, before the station went on the air (circa 1999), and my first episode of Honest Tunes Radio Show was the first Tuesday after the station went live on the air at the beginning of April 2000. Thanks to everyone who has helped, participated, posted requests & listened to the show in this great decade. Here’s an early-early hint, I’m already working on something extra cool for the 10th anniversary of Honest FM , in April 2010. A show. It will be in Fayetteville. I hope you can make it. I hope you can also tune in KXUA next Tuesday April 7th at 8PM for a pre-show Railroad Earth feature show that may include members of the band appearing live on the air to talk and play some Honest Tunes . Chris Thile (prounounced: THEE-LEE rhymes with stealy) originally from Nickel Creek is the band leader and mandolinist. Noam Pikelny plays banjo. Noam has played live on Honest Tunes before with Leftover Salmon. Chris Eldridge from The Infamous Stringdusters, whom we have also played on the radio show, is on acoustic guitar with Punch Brothers. Now, Honest Tunes ‘ good friend Greg Garrison is not out with the band on bass this tour (but he is on their album Punch). Paul Kowert is the bassist for Punch Brothers here. Members of Three Penny Acre will perform a live acoustic set on-the-air tonight from the studios of KXUA 88.3 FM Fayetteville. If the recording comes out nicely we’ll produce a podcast mp3 episode of 3 Penny Acre! The band features newgrass and folk instrumentation, singer-songwriters, two women in the band, and a barn-full of voices singing songs and pickin’ tunes for y’all. Members of 3Penny are well known players from the Northwest Arkansas acoustic and roots music community. 3 Penny Acre band members are Shannon Wurst-Guitar and Vocals, Cody Russell-Dobro and Banjo, Bayard Blain-Mandolin, and Guitar, Bernice Hembree-Up-right Bass and Vocals, Bryan Hembree- Guitar, Mandolin and Vocals. They have played several shows in the region and around Dickson Street, as 3 Penny Acre. All of the band members are regulars of the stage for the past quite a few years, with outfits like the alt-country powerhouse Charliehorse, the bluegrass of Wildwood, the duo of Bryan and Bernice, and Shannon Wurst’s solo work, full band CD, and collaborations with Sisters In The Round (other female singer-songwriter musicians from the Fayetteville area). After the radio show, on Tuesday June 12, 2007, Railroad Earth headlines with very special guests Tea Leaf Green returning to George’s Majestic Lounge on Dickson Street in Fayetteville, Arkansas, for what promises to be an amazing long night of music. The 2 bands collaborated recently on JamCruise, and at Wakarusa this past weekend (Andy and Tim both jammed with TLG). They are good friends and admirers of one another’s music, despite drawing on different aspects of live rock and roots to craft their unique sounds. RRE is a more acoustic and bluegrass oriented band, while Tea Leaf Green is a louder electric rock band with folk underpinnings. The mixture of the 2 is something to behold, something new and breakthrough. By the way, Railroad Earth has joined us for an interview on KXUA a couple years ago (watch the Slideshow in the sidebar for pictures of that!). TLG hasn’t been up there yet before 6-12-07, although we spin their CD’s all the time on the radio show and they’ve played at the legendary Chester’s Place and at George’s before. Ryan has played in town once before, opening for Mountain Of Venus several years ago. Ryan Montbleau Band is scheduled to perform Friday May 11, 2007, for the after-Happy Hour set at George’s Majestic Lounge, followed by Ryan acoustic on the big stage opening for headliner Speakeasy. After that, RMB performs again for the Midnight after-Easy closing set on the bar stage inside. Saturday, May 12, the band stays in town for Dave & Tanya’s wedding (our friends from MOV), and then Ryan Montbleau Band plays the “reception” at George’s, which is effectively closed for a private party unless you’re really coming out for the music, in which case come on in. Three sisters and one guy create a truly original mix of music: singer/songwriter troupe with new gypsy, funky folk, art rock, and international flair. Bonnie Paine leads with silky singing and nimble-fingered washboard beats. Sarah Garde accompanies on drums, Annie Paine on bass (the 3 women grew up together, evident in their musical connectivity). James Townsend brings it together with guitars and the male vocals. All play together and harmonize for one sound. They have a brand-new self-titled CD release, from which we debuted the MTK protest song, “Knights Of The Underworld” on our radio show last week for the 4th of July.
