Tiffany Christopher and Friends (including for the first time Syd from Sydney's Emporium on drums!) played last Sunday at Mad Hope 4 Positive Change, a concert and silent auction charity event benefiting Architecture For Humanity (not just building - building better). It was a great show that opened with a charging cover of Brown Sugar! TC addresses this in the interview, and plays one of the quieter songs (In A Caravan, the circus song) that translates so well to the radio studio atmosphere.

Listen to the radio show webcast tonight for announcements of upcoming concerts in the Northwest Arkansas area for 2008, and hear new CD's and classic tracks from the best of eclectic jambands and the full range of Americana roots.

With some great music. Sunday 5PM - 10PM.... Mad Hope 4 Positive Change, benefit concert. Tiffany Christopher playing! Payton Brothers (ex of Wildwood bluegrass), and some far out Cleetus Got Shot-grass music, and more live music. Foxfire = those folks that twirl fire sticks. $12 for a good cause. Here's the poster.
Check out this great BGUG article from our colleagues Honest Tune magazine, about the banjo leader of Blueground Undergrass, the Rev. Jeff Mosier; includes a terrific clench passage about Mosier's old-school Atlanta Radio show called Born In A Barn. In the story, Mosier meets Col. Bruce Hampton for the first time. Bruce tells him, "I love your radio show. I listen every Tuesday."

Coincidentally -- or not -- Col. Bruce and Rev. Mosier have each appeared twice on Honest Tunes Radio Show in Fayetteville, which has been on the air every Tuesday since 2000 (long after Born In A Barn had it's original run). These guys are both a hoot, legends and outspirations singing among us. When Rev. Mosier was on the radio show a few years ago and again recently (with both line-ups of BGUG) he spoke about his experience as a DJ in the ATL, how radio has changed, and the greatness of freeform radio ongoing in a college town like Fayetteville. The 2 times Col. Bruce has been on this radio show he has demonstrated freedom and freeform to the outer maximum. The story kind of corroborates my radio encounters with these verbal characters.

Enjoy the article!

See also this radio blog entry with Luther Dickinson Interview coming up 3-11-2008

Y'all know North Mississippi Allstars are playing this week in our suburban regions, this Tuesday 2-19 in Dallas at the fabulous Granada, this Wednesday 2-20 at the Rev Room in Little Rock.

Good news Fayetteville! They'll be back around, in our town very soon. Just Announced:
NORTH MISSISSIPPI ALLSTARS - GEORGE'S MAJESTIC LOUNGE - FAYETTEVILLE - TUESDAY MARCH 11TH!

Tuesday is the day of Honest Tunes Radio Show. On Tuesday 3-11-08 we will dedicate 2 hours of Honest Tunes Radio Show to the music of NMAS and associated projects. I've invited the band members to visit the studio for an interview if possible, so stay tuned for more on that.

In other NMAS news, lead guitarist Luther Dickinson became a member of The Black Crowes recently, as we announced on the radio show when he officially joined them. Even before that, Luther had been working with the Crowes on the recording of the new album Black Crowes album, Warpaint (2008) -- which will be the Crowes' first album since 2001.

Luther Dickinson has said he plans to continue with NMAS as well, and to boot: NMAS has a great new studio album just-released called Hernando (2008), that will be featured on an upcoming edition of Honest Tunes Radio. Listen for our review and favorite tracks in the next couple of weeks. NMAS also put out the fan-and-web-only acoustic CD, Song Of The South Presents: Mississippi Folk Music, Volume One, by The North Mississippi Allstars, with Chris Chew and Cody Dickinson taking vocals in addition to Luther's, their Dad, Jim Dickinson sitting in on piano, and a couple of fine instrumentals. This acoustic CD was named #4 on Honest Tunes Radio's Top 10 ...

I'll be back next Tuesday with a brand-new batch of music to play on Honest Tunes, and a radio review for the Baby Eleanor. Please click Eleanor's links if you're from out-of-town, or head down to George's tonight if you live near Fayetteville.

To Benefit the Baby Eleanor is a benefit concert to be held Tuesday December 4, 2007 at 7:00pm at George's Majestic Lounge on Dickson Street in Fayetteville, Arkansas. HT listeners know our friend Clayton Suttle as the drummer from Eckobase & co-founder of the Great Unknown Festival.

There will be multiple musical performances on two stages, including Mark Bilyeu of Big Smith, Mountain of Venus, Joseph Israel, Charliehorse, DJ Hod-I, Tiffany Christopher, and Speakeasy.
Oct. 26-27-28, 2007 - Tune in on iClips for a video webcast all weekend from a music festival in New Orleans! This is great quality video and high volume streaming audio, pretty good roster of bands (see below for the webcast schedule). I just watched Jason Isbell's set, he had a horn-players sitting in, ideal for the NOLA atmosphere. Here we go: http://www.iclips.net/voodoo.php

Vince Herman (Leftover Salmon) is the MC of the iClips vids! Some of the bands coming up include Honest Tunes favorites like Wilco, Toubab Krewe, Dumpstafunk, and Porter-Batiste-Stoltz. For hints on connecting to the video stream (advanced, audiophile method), and the complete line-up, click

A Different Way To Make The Voodoo Webcast Work
I'm watching it with VLC Media Player, which is a nice free player that installs fast & opens most codecs - you can also record video streams with it sometimes - Get VLC Media Player for lots of codecs and streams here http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

In VLC, click FILE > OPEN FILE: and paste in this URL for the Direct Link to the High Res webcast:
http://iclips-live-2.wm.llnwd.net/iclips_live_2

Or, the regular method is go to the iClips website and click High Res or Low Res, that way it opens in Windows Media Player for me.

The high-res mp3 was released for free download from livewidespreadpanic on Oct. 15 and is shared here by permission. The single is a preview of WSP's upcoming new album.

Jojo originated the songwriting of "Up All Night" but JB sings it. There are horns and back-up singers, kind of a Muscle Shoals sound. WSP recorded it in the Bahamas with producer Terry Manning (who has also produced for Al Green - and it shows on this track). This is basically Panic's first new original song released with Jimmy Herring on lead guitar. It sounds promising for the next album. They decided to release the mp3 for free on any/all websites by permission of the band - that's pretty cool, and it allows me to include the mp3 with this week's Honest Tunes Radio Podcast. According to the press release, "The band’s intention is to offer the track free for download on all music sites permitting, with no strings attached." Panic satisfied their recording contract with Sanctuary Records & now they are an independent band again, with their own Widespread Records.

There's not a lot of guitar solo here, but you can bet they'll add that part in concert. Jimmy's all over the articulation of the melody, with some pretty catchy and comfortable licks, to my ear; I guess he'll be called on to cover the horn parts later live. There's some chunky/clunky rhythm guitar from JB that underpins and synchs-up with the horns, keys, and Jimmy's parts -- I like the sound of 2 guitars. I like to hear Jimmy playing like this, more of a Little Feat kind of style instead of a fusion shredder or psychedlic drip. It's good for the Gulf Coast swagger of this tune. Confidence in laziness, making an art of laid-back assertion. Another reviewer thought it called Van Morrison to mind. -DG</itunes:summary>

Today is the 10 year anniversary of one of the greatest guest-appearances ever between Widespread Panic and Gov't Mule: on a Sunday in Montgomery, Alabama, 7-20-1997. If you haven't heard this show from a decade ago, stream the 2 mp3's here on my blog (click "Play In Pop-Up" at the top of the post) to hear the epic high peaks of the show:

        * Listen to HOUSER take a solo from 3:20 to 4:12
        * and then JB sings a verse from 4:12 to 4:47
        * that minute-and-a-half is SO PANIC

        * at 5:19 Warren calls for "Jojo" to take the lead

        * at 6:25 That's Allen Woody you hear on mandolin. Schools played the bass.

        * at 8:33 JB takes the lead vocals again ~ and changes up the words a bit ~ beautiful. With THIS and the Amazing Grace JB sings later in the night, this is really a peak Sunday show for John Bell.

Next - Here is WSP's post-Drums in second set, with Gov't Mule sitting in, from Sunday 7-20-1997, Montgomery.

SUNDAY 7-20-97 Montgomery Civic Center

Nobody's Fault But Mine*
Amazing Grace* (!)
Nobody's Fault But Mine* (!!)
Feelin' Alright*

all on one track ~ 19 minutes

SBD 256kbps mp3

        * 00:27 Warren Haynes, Dave Schools, JB and Mike Houser drop this show into a conversation of blues, starting Nobody's Fault But Mine which builds up and breaks down, then...

        * 07:11 ....JB's brief but beautiful Amazing Grace (!) falls perfectly back into...

        * 08:01 to 09:16 ....an apocalyptic ending jam (!!) for Nobody's Fault But Mine, with Nance / Sunny / Abts thunder roll into a devestating dual layered lead from Haynes and Houser.

        * 09:32 jam into Feelin' Alright
        * 16:32 The dual lead guitar peak is back towards the climax of Feelin' Alright.
        * 18:27 The whole ending is just epic with everyone on at once... cathartic

By this point in the show the 2 bands had virtually destroyed Mongomery Civic Center. 10 Years Later, in 2007 the city of Montgomery actually undertook tearing down part of the building, which is the basis of the animated GIF file I made to illustrate this post.

If you want to know why, or what I like about WSP and Mule and the way they combined older music in new ways for some of the most exciting concerts of the 1990's, just listen to these mp3 examples. --Dgold</itunes:summary>

Arkansas is all-about the Widespread Panic show tonight, Tuesday 7-10-2007 in Little Rock at Riverfest Amphitheatre (formerly known as Riverfront Amphitheater). Honest Tunes will be rocking-out in The Rock tonight. No radio show / webcast this week, but we'll be back on the air next week, hopefully with a recording from the WSP show (bit torrent link is below).

A reporter from the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette called me this week and asked me what I think about Widespread Panic, their history in Arkansas, and their sound with the new lead guitarist Jimmy Herring. She asked me how I would explain Panic to a friend who isn't a fan. We chatted for a half-hour. A few dgold quotes were used in the article (published in the Sunday editon of the statewide newspaper), along with quotes from Domingo "Sunny" Ortiz, the percussionist of WSP, who I've been a fan of since the early 1990's. Here is an excerpt newspaper clipping of the story, and local photo(s) of the venue by the river (courtesy of various LR promotional galleries).

This is great quality, watching the show from High Sierra live on my laptop, The Waybacks are covering "Shape I'm In" right now. Register for iclips (takes 10 seconds), then you can watch video webcast of High Sierra Music Festival all weekend, Thursday to Sunday

http://www.iclips.net/highsierra.php

OR try this Direct Link to the webcast (should open with Windows Media Player), this is an alternate method to try.

    Thursday:
    Great American Taxi
    The Waybacks ((on now))
    Garaj Mahal

Friday - Saturday - Sunday... Not sure who is webcasting, but probably Drive-By Truckers, Martin Sexton, YMSB, Les, Page McConnell, ThaMuseMeant, Xavier Ruud, Leftover Salmon! and quite a few more. I'm hoping they get a set of Tea Leaf Green on there, and if they broadcast the reunion of Leftover Salmon that would be really special. Here is the schedule of the entire festival (not the webcast).

I'd watch this all weekend, except I'm planning to head out for some music in person: Mountain Of Venus in Fayetteville on Friday, and Col. Bruce Hampton in Hot Springs on Saturday 7-7-07. Have a great weekend everybody!

Dear Listeners, Some uncertainty for online listeners in this Age of the Intertron: The radio show and podcast will continue unflinchingly. KXUA's weekly webcast on Tuesdays might have to stop at some point (who knows when, could be any time) because of new regulations. Here is an excerpt of the message from KXUA station management about the impending shut-down of live internet radio ...

Personal recollection of this radio show day. When I did this radio show I was waiting to hear back from Bb. She called me after, and left a short message, and I phoned back. Some of the music is just what I need to keep on for health and hope. Before the show, the reason was to take my mind off the uncertainty and just spin tunes; after, I know it's music that sticks with me through any events, relects and heals any feeling. I love when Michelle Shocked sings, The secret to a long life is knowing when it's time to go. If trouble don't kill me, I'm gonna live a long time. Hope to see you again another day down the road. Looking forward to the Michelle Shocked show later this month, having something cool on the ...

Yep, Jimmy has jammed with all-of-the-above, as a member / fill-in / or special guest. I'll spin selections of my favorites on my radio show tonite.

Widespread Panic in-transition in 2006, announced last week that Jimmy Herring is joining WSP on lead guitar starting at Radio City Music Hall in NYC in September for Fall Tour.

Jimmy Herring photograph by Michael Saba, photo illustration by Daniel Gold, from the Allman Brothers Band show in Kansas City, Summer 2000.

Words to announce:

Fasten your seatbelts, for the next few hours Jimmy Herring plays guitar on every song. Widespread Panic announced on their website that Jimmy Herring will join the band as lead guitarist starting at Radio City Music Hall in September.

Thatrsquo;s a follow up to Jimmyrsquo;s roles subbing for Dicky Betts in the Allman Brothers and the Jerry Garcia Slot in The Dead. But those arenrsquo;t Jimmyrsquo;s original credentials. He is a jazz, rock and fusion guitarist who can play almost any genre of music, as you can hear all genres mixed together in this live concert recording of Col. Bruce Hampton the Aquarium Rescue Unit.

awesome display of technique from the Nicest guy you'll ever meet

Find out all the songs and bands tonite on dgold.info/radio

Hope you're ready to hear Jimmy play with a variety of other artists in different styles
Project Z - improv Herring Sipe and the late great bassist Ricky Keller. Sipe from ARU, out touring now with another band HRS and we'll hear from them later in the program
This is their self-titled debut, they also managed to complete a posthumous album Lincoln Memorial on Terminus Records

Jimmy cover song Fusion Tribute "Meeting of the Spirits"

Endanger Species - jimmy original credits
Doesn't matter what style of music whether it's bluegrass funk rock, or jazz fusion, you can always tell it's Herring on guitar by his clear tone and his unique touch. But one thing you don't hear often is Jimmy on acoustic like he plays on this Endangered Species "Folley"

That was Jimmy playing with a former member of WSP, keyboardist T Lavitz, in Endangered Species. They also played together in Jazz Is Dead, an all instrumental ban...</itunes:summary>

If that doesn't work for ya', go to the regular web link of the "Blueroom" webcast site with the embedded video stream. When you're there, try the 2 quality versions, and try right-click > zoom, or double clicking the video to increase the size.

I put that link into my Firefox browser and told it to open the link with Windows Media Player, so it launched in the player not embedded in the browser window.

This week's show was a look back at Wakarusa 2006, in review. We've done 2 previous Preview radio shows about Wakarusa Music Fest (Wakarusa webcast #1 was here in 2006, 2005 and 2004 as well).. Look for Pictures of Wakarusa on the photo gallery of Honest Tune Magazine.

Thanks to my good friend Phoreal for co-hosting the radio show with me tonight! -Dgold
